Visiting Restrictions Lifted at UHL (08/03/2010)
The recent outbreak of diarrhoea and vomiting in the community has been successfully contained in the hospital through our strict infection control procedures, and no major outbreak has occurred in the hospital during the second wave of this illness. The visiting restrictions have undoubtedly played a part in limiting the introduction of this illness to the vulnerable patient population, and the cooperation of the public has been very much appreciated. Now that the threat of a major outbreak has subsided, we are lifting the visiting restriction. General visiting is now allowed from 3pm - 8pm on our adult wards, and 3pm - 7pm on the children\'s wards. We still ask that any one with any symptoms of cold of flu like illness, or suffering diarrhoea or vomiting in the past 48 hours does not visit the hospital

More information about the new ward block is available on this site, including pictures showing the inside of the construction and aerial views taken from the top of the cranes.

Direct Access to Midwives

NHS Lewisham and University Hospital Lewisham have launched a new direct access service for expectant mothers or women who think they may be pregnant. Women in Lewisham now have the choice of getting in touch directly with their community midwife without seeing their GP first when they find out they are pregnant.

The service, initially launched in Deptford and New Cross on 1st April 2009, was rolled out across further sites in Lewisham in December 2009. Women will now be able to see a midwife at the following drop-in centres:

Waldron Health Centre, Stanley Street, SE8 4BG - Tuesdays, 12 noon to 3pm

Downham Leisure Centre, 7-9 Moorside Road, BR1 4QN - Saturdays, 9:30am to 12 noon

St John's Medical Centre, 50-60 Loampit Hill, SE13 7SX - Thursdays, 3pm-7pm

Antenatal Clinic, UHL - Lewisham High Street, SE13 6LH - Wednesdays, 1pm-4pm

Sydenham Green Group Practice, 26 Holmshaw Close, SE26 4TH - Fridays, 2pm-5pm

Alternatively, women can call 07554 115649 to arrange an appointment to see a midwife at a time that suits them.

These changes come as a result of consultation with pregnant women and new parents in Lewisham. Last year, NHS Lewisham asked these individuals how they would like their maternity care arranged and the majority said they would prefer to go straight to a midwife.
