The Riverside

The Trust's new £69m Riverside ward building is now full operational. It was officially opened on 21 May 2007 by guest of honour, Archbishop Desmond Tutu. See the media section below for pictures of the building and a video from the opening.

The new wing of University Hospital Lewisham contains 419 adult and elderly inpatient beds built to the highest standard and replaces the old and outdated Nightingale-style wards with new single rooms and four bedded bay units. The new block also include additional theatres, an endoscopy suite, a large booked admissions unit and an integrated Critical Care Unit for our seriously ill patients.

Services were smoothly transferred to the new building by early December 2006 with minimal disruption to our patients.

The design of the new wing incorporates the latest technology including a Photovoltaic (solar energy) plant which will generate electricity for use in the hospital. This is the first significant NHS building to use a renewable energy source to provide some of its energy requirement.
